On February 16, 1872, Pope Pius IX severed a portion of what was then the sprawling Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany and created the Diocese of Ogdensburg. The new dioceses would encompass 12,036 square miles of northern New York, including Clinton, Essex, Franklin, Hamilton, Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence counties, as well as northern Herkimer County.

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Ogdensburg will celebrate the 150th Anniversary of its founding with a special Anniversary Mass to be held at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Ogdensburg on August 10 at 1 p.m. The principal celebrant of the Mass will be Timothy Cardinal Dolan, Metropolitan Archbishop of New York. Bishop Terry R. LaValley, Bishop of the Diocese of Ogdensburg, will offer the homily.
