Did you know that chocolate milk is great to refuel with after exercising?

When you exercise, your body burns calories, along with electrolytes and fluids. After a workout, it is important to refuel with the right beverage. A lot of people would prefer a sports drink or water, but is this the best choice? According to the USDA, chocolate milk is the best beverage to refuel with.

Chocolate milk replenishes electrolytes, has reduced and natural sugar, and has nine essential nutrients your body needs. These other beverages may look appealing, but they do not offer the same benefits that milk can provide.

Milk is a powerhouse of nutrients. One of them is protein.

Protein is great for your body and is needed for everyone, both young and old. Protein helps to build strong bones and muscles, and gives you more energy by preventing blood sugar highs and lows.

The American Dairy Association North East (ADANE) helped to secure chocolate milk as the official beverage of New York State Public Schools Athletic Association. Each year, ADANE sponsors 135 high school sports championships by providing athletes with chocolate milk to refuel with.

Not only is chocolate milk great for high school athletes but for professionals too. For example, Hall of Fame Major League Baseball all-star Mariano Rivera incorporates milk in his daily routine. He says “I love chocolate milk; it was a part of my game day routine. My muscles would get sore after pitching so I would get a glass jar of milk and pour chocolate into it.”

I encourage everyone to get outside and exercise in the nice summer weather. You don’t have to be an athlete to enjoy the benefits of a delicious glass of chocolate milk. You can get one of your three servings of dairy by enjoying this recipe.
