At the end of this month, the Malone Telegram will be moving from our office adjacent to Key Bank on Main Street and working remotely until we find an office that suits our current needs. Until we find a new home, the newspaper’s staff will continue to report on news, sports and community events, and operate as normal — just from another location.
The move is necessary due to several factors, mainly, the space the Telegram currently occupies is far too big for the paper’s needs and the cost of rent has become a financial burden as we face the same challenges as small newspapers nationwide. We greatly appreciate our subscribers and advertisers, who support the paper. In the past year the cost of producing the print edition has escalated significantly. The cost of paper, ink, lithographic printing plates and transportation have all been victims of inflation.
A search for a smaller office space for the Telegram is under way and we hope to be relocated soon.
Along with the move our staffing has been changed to focus on news and sports reporting and editing. We have had a tight knit staff for years, and along with the move we will see three of our co-workers go. They have supported us in the office, and their dedication to the Telegram is greatly appreciated.
Unfortunately, companies across the country have been forced to make similarly difficult decisions when it comes to jobs. Certainly we at the Telegram and Johnson Newspaper Corp. give our heartfelt best wishes and thanks to those impacted by staff changes at the newspaper.
Re-locating to a smaller office space will allow the Telegram to maintain its news and sports writing teams and perhaps even grow - content will continue to be the main driver of our product.
Change is sometimes difficult, but as the old adage goes: There is only one constant and that is change. This is a change for the Telegram, but by no means is it the end. It can be viewed as a new start but our mission remains the same: To serve our readers by bringing them the best local content possible. It also means continuing to serve not only our loyal advertisers, but to those who are new or soon-to-be advertisers.
As we make our transition while searching for a new office and spend time working from home, our mission will still be steadfast no matter where we are working. Our news team will still be covering local news. Our sports team will still be covering local sports. Our advertising team will still be working hard.
This change is meant to ensure a strong future for the newspaper, so while we’re moving, we are here to stay.
