To the editor:
The voters of Burke have a choice. Officials are elected to represent all residents; not just their party and/or their supporters.
My name is June Parmeter. I was raised in Chateaugay, NY. I have lived in Burke for 18 years. I have taught special and general education students in most of the local districts for over 30 years. I continue to work with youth. I want support for our veterans and our elderly residents.
I received my bachelor’s degree from SUNY Cortland and my master’s degree from SUNY Plattsburgh. I believe my personal qualities, professional experience and skills will be a valuable asset when working as a town councilperson.
This will be my first opportunity in an elected position. I bring new eyes and a fresh perspective. I am an independent thinker who likes to work with a “facts and evidence” approach. I have a willingness to learn and to seek out answers. It is important to have meaningful and productive discussions. I believe listening for understanding is very important when working to resolve differences.
I support better communication with residents and easier access to information. I will work with current policies and establish new policies when needed. I will work carefully, asking does this make sense now, 20, 30 or more years from now? I support growth.
In order to truly be able to represent, I believe that it is important to attend and to participate in the monthly meetings.
MY willingness to “throw my hat into the political arena” is not personal. I want to thank the current board members for their time and their willingness to serve.
It would be an honor to serve on the Burke Town Council. I respectfully ask for your support and vote on Nov. 5.
June A. Parmeter
