Franklin Academy High School will be the site of this season’s team wrestling Dual Meet Qualifier, with the winner of this event representing Section 10 at the team competition on Feb. 1 at the SRC Arena on the campus of Onondaga Community College. Section 10 did not have a representative attend last year’s state match due to the sectional event getting called off because of poor weather throughout the North Country region.
There will be two rounds of wrestling, with four of the five Section 10 teams competing in the Division II-only event. Weigh-ins for all competitors will commence at 4 p.m. (there will be no Honor Weigh-ins as this is considered a postseason event), with the opening round slated to begin at 5 p.m.
Gouverneur will be the top-seeded team and will face Ogdensburg in the first round, while Canton and Franklin Academy will vie for a title berth in the other opening-round event. The championship and third-place matches are slated to begin at 7 p.m.
According to Franklin Academy Athletic Director Joey Santamoor, there will be two mats used for both rounds.
In the second round, the winners of round one will vie for the right to represent the section at OCC, with the losers of the opening round battling for third place team honors.
Because this is considered to be a postseason event, there will be an admission fee. Cost will be $3 for students and seniors, $5 for adults or $12 for a family.
