MALONE — If she looks beyond the shoulders of the village residents signing up for the third week of the annual Fun Run, she can see them.

Carrie Pomainville can see the town and village’s children — racing numbers stickered to their shirts — hug and chase one another through a labyrinth of parent legs, behind the starting line.

The kids’ little legs are turning, before marks are even set. Pomainville is three weeks into her first year managing the event. An event she partook in so many times as a child herself.

The event has been held each Wednesday at 6 p.m., over the course of the last month. There are three more remaining this summer. Runners can be entered in a running pool as low as a 5-and-under group.

The Fun Run has always been an activity that brings the village together each summer, Pomainville says. Despite the ongoing pandemic. It’s something for the community to be up and about with, after COVID-19 restrictions in the state were lifted.

Pomainville says her favorite part of the event is to watch the kids smile, as they run around Sylvester Lamica Field’s perimeter. The kids, she says, aren’t in it to win, per say.

They do it, simply, for the “joy of running.”

“It’s bittersweet,” Pomainville says. “It brings back a lot of memories.”
