MALONE – For the first time since 2019, a spring sporting event was underway in Franklin County on Thursday. The Franklin Academy golf team hosted Gouverneur at the Malone Golf Club, where the Huskies edged the Wildcats, 234-249.
“This was a good team victory,” Franklin Academy coach Chris Kelley said. “It was the first career golf match for Jack (Monette), Dawson (Miletich), Jerry (Scharf) and Seth (Lockwood) so they got to start on a positive note.”
Miletich paved the way with 45 shots. Monette (52) and Scharf (47) had strong outings, while Lockwood posted 55 in exhibition. Owen Eels matched Miletich’s 45-shot performance, though in exhibition.
Gouverneur’s Dylan Farr had a match performance of 41 shots.
“Overall it was just great to have the team in action after being sidelined last spring,” Kelley said. “I am looking forward to seeing how all the players improve as the season progresses.”
Evan Miller (48), Sam Eels (46) and Will Leroy (48) backed the Huskies on the green in the team win.
“It’s awesome that we’re able to get back out here, that the kids can play,” Kelley said. “Obviously COVID has changed a lot of things. We didn’t get a preseason, which is when we go over a lot of the rules for the new kids. We get to work on getting some of the rust out, hitting plastic golf balls inside. But it’s just great to be out here, I know the kids are happy to be out here.”
