NORFOLK – At the Dominic Zappia Arena, the Norwood-Norfolk Icemen solidified their position at the top of the Northern Athletic Conference Division II standings with a 2-0 win against rival Salmon River on Wednesday. The win improves the Norwood-Norfolk mark to 5-3 in the NAC (7-3 overall), while the loss drops the Shamrocks to 2-3 in league play, and 4-5 overall.
Goalie Thomas Cafarella stopped all 22 shots the Shamrocks put on frame to record the clean sheet, while Ryley Ashley scored the only goal the Icemen would need in the win. Jude Lauzon and Robert Voss were credited with assists on the eventual game-winning goal.
Norwood-Norfolk tacked on a much-needed insurance marker late in the second period when Jayden Grant put the puck past Salmon River goalie Ryan Oakes Jr. (27 saves). John McCall provided the setup on the tally.
The win by the Icemen gives them 10 points in the standings and keeps them two points in front of second-place Ogdensburg (8 points), as the Blue Devils produced a 5-1 road win against the host Islanders on Wednesday.
In the only other boys hockey game on Wednesday, Canton doubled up St. Lawrence Central 4-2.
The lone boys basketball game on Wednesday had Gouverneur topped Potsdam 65-55, while in girls Central Division games, Massena beat host Potsdam 58-37 and Canton defeated St. Lawrence 63-49.
The Franklin Academy versus Saranac Central bowling match at the North Bowl Lanes in Plattsburgh was cancelled. No make-up date is expected.
