NORWOOD – The Brushton-Moira varsity baseball team’s season was brought to an end on Monday evening following a 17-4 loss to the top-seeded Norwood-Norfolk Flyers in the Section 10 Class C quarterfinals.
The Flyers opened with a three-run first inning, scoring two of them off wild pitches from Panthers hurler Mason Poirier. Brushton scored one in the top of the second to trim the lead, but Norwood responded with four more runs to push the lead to 7-1 after three frames.
The Panthers threatened to come back with a strong fourth inning where they recorded five consecutive hits and scored three runs to close the gap, but the Flyers unleashed an avalanche in the bottom of the inning. Each Flyer in the batting order scored a run as Norwood sent 10 runners across home plate to make their lead a comfortable 17-4 before Brushton was able to get out of the inning. Three quick outs later, the Flyers were moving on.
Dustin Baker scored two runs with a hit and two stolen bases to lead the Panther offensive effort. Broc Allen and Ethan Parent both singled, scored and stole a base.
For Norwood, Owen Malone pitched the first two and two-thirds innings to record the win. Offensively for the Flyers, Matt Richards singled, doubled, drove in two runs and came around to score two others. Riley Bond had two hits, two runs scored and an RBI. Noah North slugged a three-run triple in the fourth inning and scored a run. Andrew Favreau doubled, scored three runs and drove home another. Brock Cousineau (2RS) and AJ Palmer (RS) both connected for a two-run single. Reese Grant (2RS, RBI), Brendan Bombard (RS, RBI) and Malone (3RS) all singled.
The Panthers finished the year with a 5-10 record and took fourth in the East Division.
