The Telegram Sports Department continues its salute to the 2020 seniors from northern Franklin County. The next group of student/athletes to be recognized are the members of the Franklin Academy varsity baseball team, of which only two of the seniors – Callahan Rogers and Keith Shafer – responded to the numerous information requests. The others who were slated to play on the FA baseball team for head coach Tim Lamay Sr. are Nicholas Bertrand, Braedyn Dietz, Aadam Fakir, Seth Gonia, Scott McCray Jr. and Jake VanSteenburg.
Callahan Rogers, son of George and Denise Rogers, was a three-season athlete at FA, participating in soccer, boys ice hockey and baseball.
Callahan was co-captain of the 2019 boys varsity soccer team during a season that saw him earn a Second Team All-Northern selection and a Coaches Award and would have been in his second full season on the varsity baseball team. During the 2019-20 winter season, Callahan was named a Section 10 Sportsmanship Award winner and was also named an Athlete of Distinction for all three sports. Callahan was also projected to be an anchor on the right side of the infield for Lamay at first base.
The Franklin Academy Class of 2020 salutatorian will be attending Binghamton University in the fall, majoring in biology.
Keith Shafer, son of Stephen and Cindy Shafer, was also a three-sport performer during high school. He played soccer in the fall, basketball during the winter season and baseball in the spring. He, like Rogers, was a co-captain for coach Chris Yaw on the boys varsity soccer team, was one of the top defenders for coach Tim Lamay Sr. on the varsity basketball team and was a mainstay in the outfield for Lamay on the baseball diamond.
Keith plans on attending the University at Albany and will also continue to play soccer in men’s leagues during the summers.
