BRUSHTON –– A slice of New York City has come to the village of Brushton.

Long time residents Steve and Tammy Bushey opened Firehouse Pizzeria last weekend in the same building as Bushey’s Ice Cream shop off U.S. Route 11, serving up pizza and more. The building also used to house Double D’s Café, which was owned by sisters Dawn Morgan and Donna Bushey.

“We have always dreamed of having our own pizza place,” said Tammy. “Pizza, subs, wings, appetizers, salads, dessert pizzas and calzones too,” she said.

The Busheys say the response from the community in the short time they have been open has been overwhelming, adding the business could not have opened if it had not been from all the help they received from family and friends.

“We also want to mention our manager, Shawna Berry, because without her we would not be here” said Tammy.

Opening the pizzeria was not just something the Busheys did at the last minute; both of them have gone through extensive training to bring something to the area that it do not have.

“We believe our pizza is different from everything else around here,” said Steve. “That is why we went to New York City to learn how to cook New York City style pizza. It is a little bit thinner crust,”

The pizza is also cooked differently. While some chain pizza restaurants in Malone may just reheat dough on a conveyor belt, the Busheys say their pizza is cooked on a hot stone.

“It is a New York-style brick oven,” said Steve. “You can use wood or propane to cook with and it has a rotating platform on it, so you can put five large pizzas on it at once and it spins itself and cooks itself,”

The small pizzas are 12 inches and the large is 16 inches. Some of the flavors include a maple bacon, steak and cheese, barbecue chicken and chicken bacon ranch, just to name a few.

“Everything is fresh here and there is a need for it in this community,” said Steve.

The pizza is not just something people in Bruston can enjoy either. The Busheys say they will deliver to anyone within a 6 or 7 mile radius of their restaurant.

“There are some food places around here, but we wanted to bring the New York City-style pizza up this way and this is what we did it,” said Steve.

People who want a taste of their food can dine in and sit in their seating area; they can also call ahead and get their pizza to go or have the food delivered. The Busheys say since their opening, the phone has been ringing off the hook and they are already thinking about future plans for the restaurant.

“We have talked in the future of maybe putting on an addition or maybe a little bar area to maybe serve beer and wine and maybe have a bigger dining room,” said Steve.
