BRENDAN MCDONOUGH/THE TELEGRAMJames Kohler receives ashes from the Rev. Steven Murray at the Notre Dame Roman Catholic Church in the village of Malone on Wednesday. Ash Wednesday marks the start of the Lenten season that ends on Holy Saturday, the day before Easter, which this year is April 12. The Christian observance got its name from the placing of ashes on the foreheads of people in the sign of a cross, while the words “Repent, and believe in the Gospel” or “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return,” are spoken.
