Vermont man arrested after allegedly fleeing police during traffic stop

CHATEAUGAY LAKE — State police were involved in a pursuit Sunday evening that led to the arrest of a Vermont man.

A traffic stop was conducted in the town of Plattsburgh during which Robert Lanpher, 57, of Barre, Vt., stopped initially, then allegedly sped off when a trooper approached his vehicle.

The pursuit began at approximately 9:19 p.m. on Route 374 in Plattsburgh, according to police. Lanpher traveled west on 374 through the towns of Plattsburgh, Dannemora and Saranac.

The pursuit concluded when Lanpher’s vehicle eventually stopped when it ran out of gas in front of the Owly Out Bar & Restaurant next to Upper Chateaugay Lake.

Police said Lanpher was found to be driving while intoxicated with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.14% and in possession of cocaine.

Lanpher was charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and driving while intoxicated, along with several Vehicle and Traffic Law violations. He was released with tickets to appear in Dannemora, Plattsburgh and Saranac town courts and Dannemora Village Court.
